Find and Follow Your Passion

By Terri Stone

We’ve all heard that we are happiest when we do what we love, follow our dreams, and pursue our passions. Which sounds great, but practical advice on how to achieve these lofty goals is much harder to find. If you do find it, it probably doesn’t look good. And to creatives like us visuals are important!

Now Elle Luna, who walks the walk as a full-time painter, has published The Crossroads of Should and Must, a book that delivers sound advice in an appealing format. Its covers are satisfyingly hefty pasteboard, and Elle’s artwork enlivens many of the 176 inside pages.

Elle says that Shoulds come from outside us; Musts are inside. When Shoulds squash Musts, we aren’t our true selves. With engaging illustrations and stories based on real experiences, she explains how Shoulds can get in the way of our happiness.

In my favorite part of the book, she maps out how we can discover our Musts. Elle’s artwork turns what could be a nerve-wracking bit of self-examination into a lighthearted game.

The book also addresses the question of finances with a shrewd discussion of must-have money versus nice-to-have money.

Finally, Elle suggests sensible ways to begin to push aside Shoulds in favor of your Must. If you’re not ready to take the Big Leap yet, that’s OK—you can still move toward your goal.

Everyone gets the chance to choose between Should and Must. With Elle’s guidance, more people will be able to ignore the mountains of Shoulds in favor of their Musts.
