A still from the animated film A Lucky Girl, animated by Martin O'Neill

Life Under a Lucky Star

By Charles Purdy

In the beautiful, poignant animated short film A Lucky Girl, actress, writer, and Holocaust survivor Bettine Le Beau recounts the story of her childhood in Nazi-occupied Europe—and talks about her views on happiness, hope, and fate.

Bettine shared her story in a conversation with collage artist Martin O’Neill, who then created the animation elements from Bettine’s scrapbooks and photo albums, as well as found ephemera. Designer and directorAndrew Griffin collaborated with Martin to add animation and sound to the final, eight-minute film (created in partnership with the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust).
