Brian Yap created these printable skull masks from downloadable templates in Adobe apps.

Make Your Own Mask

By Brian Yap

Are you looking for a costume that’s quick and unique? Just download my printable skull mask template and personalize it in Adobe Illustrator Draw, Adobe Photoshop Sketch, Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe Photoshop . The download includes one blank template, one template with basic skull features already drawn in, and finished examples of how I decorated the template.

(Note: To work with the file in Illustrator, open it in Draw on an iPad first and then send the file to Illustrator from there, using the share button at top right of the Draw interface.)

I'd love to see what you come up with. If you post your mask on Instagram or Twitter, tag @AdobeCreate so I don't miss it.

In the screen-capture videos below (no sound), you’ll see snippets of me using Draw on the iPad to set up, draw, and decorate the template. Much of the process in Sketch is similar.

Draw Skull Features. Draw the eye cavity and other details with the taper brush. Tip: To fill a fully enclosed area, use a long press. Change the brush size with the interface on the left. In this video, you can see me deciding to lighten the grey shade I used for the details; you can do so very quickly by using a long press on an object to change its color.

Add Design. In a new layer, change the brush color and draw details on one side of the skull. Duplicate the layer, flip it using the layer options, and then merge the two mirrored layers.

Layer in Color. Change the brush color and, on a new layer, draw in the eye and nose areas. Complete the design using the same tools and techniques. I also decorated the skull mask template in black and white.

Tip: The downloadable template file is 8.5"x11". For a printable format from Draw or Sketch, you can save it as a JPG, or export it directly to Illustrator or Photoshop. Before you do so, make sure that the blueline guide is on top; that shows you where to cut out the mask. Use a glue stick to connect the tabs, and you're ready to go.
