Asavari Kumar and Her Project

About the Artist

Asavari Kumar’s award-winning films, new media work, and graphic narratives have been showcased at numerous festivals and exhibition spaces such as the Los Angeles Zine Fest and the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Her projects have also been featured in multiple publications. Drawn to cross-cultural narratives, Kumar uses character-driven storytelling to parse her evolving cultural and political identity. Through her body of work, she hopes to generate a discourse surrounding ideas of “home” and “belonging” and find where her own narratives intersect with those of people around her. Kumar holds a BFA in animation film design from the National Institute of Design, and an MFA in experimental animation from the California Institute of the Arts. She is a former artist in residence for Adobe Aero and is currently exploring how the medium of AR can used to tell compelling personal stories.

About the Project

Kumar isn’t new to the methods we now all use to socialize from afar. She has been connecting this way with her friends, her family, and even her colleagues for quite some time. She’s based in California; her sister, in Copenhagen; and her mom and dad, in New Delhi. Online communication has been a big part of her family life since she moved to the United States, but before, she’d always had the ability to freely travel back home. A New Normal is a story about connection, hope, and warmth. An avid filmmaker and a lover of graphic novels and animation, Kumar combines her design and drawing skills with Adobe Aero to bring this experience to life.
